Woodland Retreat: Harmonizing Nature and Design
Designer: Barbara Hall Popolow
Project Manager: Clay Larsen
We worked closely with clients who were keen to reorganize their backyard to accommodate a new screened-in sitting area, a shed and to create a connection to their side yard berry and vegetable beds. They aimed to maintain a naturalistic theme that would complement the woodland area behind their home. To address local water restrictions, the design incorporated native plants and utilized the client’s rain barrels for water conservation.
The clients participated actively in the design phase, bringing fun and thoughtful ideas that integrated seamlessly with their lifestyle. They even took on the task of removing part of their deck to make room for a new patio, which we installed with full-color bluestone. This choice was particularly harmonious, matching the natural stone and exterior structures beautifully, enhancing the overall aesthetic and functionality of their outdoor space.
Flower beds around the patio attract pollinators throughout the warm months, while woodland understory plants create a transition into the wilder areas of their yard.
